recently caught up with rising dancehall artist Sean Paul at Salaam Remi's studio in New
York City. Sean shared with us a bit about himself and invited us
into a recording session with him. When Jeremy Harding's "Playground" rhythm buss with Beenie Man riding it high into the Billboard charts with "Who Am I?" in '98, it helped rocket careers for Jeremy as a producer. It also jump-started careers for two virtually unknown artists- Mr. Vegas with "Nike Air" and Sean Paul with "Infiltrate", as both artists had their first "boom" tunes in the dancehall. Growing up in the upscale Norbrook area of St. Andrew, Sean Paul Henriques was born into a family of swimmers. He even represented the National team when he was in High School. Of Chinese and Portuguese descent, Sean also comes from a family of creative talent, as his brother Jason selects for the Kingston sound system Coppershot and his mother is an artist who paints professionally. Sean and his Dutty Cup crew, which includes Sean and his friends Looga Man, Kurup, Chicken, and Mossy Kid, are labeled "uptown " deejays, considered to have more privileged upbringings than other dancehall artists who predominantly hail from ghetto areas. However, if you go to Kingston today compared to 10 years ago, radio play of dancehall music has increased tenfold reaching all classes. All-inclusive "Uptown" sessions these days are ram packed, often holding 1000 people and upwards, proving that dancehall is not just a ghetto thing anymore. In music, its not Seans class which speaks for him, its his records. Building on his characteristic sound similar to that of Supercat with his up-to-date, catering-to-the girlies lyrics, Sean has quickly carved his niche in the dancehall. Since "Infiltrate" Sean has been steadily building a catalog of hits such as "Deport Them" and "Here Comes the Boom" alongside Vegas and rap artist DMX. Currently he is compiling an LP to be released this summer and has begun production for his own 7" label, Bassline Records. |
